People often use the words mobility and flexibility interchangeably. They're connected, but understanding the difference helps you train for what you actually want: moving comfortably through your day.

Flexibility: how far a muscle can lengthen

Flexibility describes how much a muscle can be stretched, often passively, for example when you hold a stretch. It's one ingredient of good movement.

Mobility: how well you can move through a range, with control

Mobility is about actively moving a joint through its range while staying in control. Reaching overhead to a high shelf, turning to look behind you while driving or squatting down to pick something up all depend on mobility.

Why both matter

You can be flexible enough to reach a position but not strong or controlled enough to use it. Or you may have strength but feel stiff and restricted. Training both together tends to make movement feel easier and more natural.

What training both can look like

  • Gentle, controlled movement through comfortable ranges
  • Stretching where it's useful, held without forcing
  • Strength work through a full, comfortable range of motion
  • Practising real-life positions such as reaching, rotating, bending and getting up from the floor

Listen to your body

Mobility and flexibility work should feel like effort, not pain. Ranges improve gradually, and forcing a stretch rarely helps. If a particular joint is painful, talk with your healthcare provider and let your coach know so the plan can be adjusted.
