Feeling unsteady changes how you move. People start holding railings, avoiding uneven ground or turning down outings because they don't trust their footing. Balance training is about rebuilding that trust step by step.

Balance is a skill you can practise

Balance depends on strength in the legs and hips, control through the trunk, how well your joints move, and how quickly you can react when something shifts. Because it is made of several parts, it responds well to regular, specific practice.

What balance training can include

  • Supported standing drills next to a stable surface, progressing as control improves.
  • Leg and hip strengthening such as sit-to-stands and step-ups, scaled to your level.
  • Weight shifts and stepping patterns that mimic real-life movement, like turning or stepping over an object.
  • Getting down to and up from the floor, practised gradually and safely, when it's appropriate for you.

Practising safely

Balance work should challenge you without putting you at real risk. That means having support nearby, progressing gradually and stopping when fatigue affects your control. This is one area where having a coach beside you makes a real difference.

Confidence is part of the goal

Clients often describe the change in terms of everyday life: feeling steadier walking around, worrying less about getting things off the floor, being comfortable on a boat or uneven ground. Results differ from person to person, and progress takes consistent work.
